aws tool

The AWSum Tool is a program that is free to our contractors to use in easily manipulating design parameters within the current Alberta (PSDS) Private Sewage Disposal System regulations. The program is not a design tool, it only helps with interpreting the data collected by a professional system designer.

By simply inputting the necessary data, the contractor can determine their type of system, the size of the system, and manipulate options to optimize system efficiencies.

The program recommends tank size from the AWS catalogue and helps define pump curves for the most effective choice.

When all inputs have been entered, the system will print out the necessary documents and calculation sheets to submit with the permit application.

With this Tool, the designer can alter one or two variables to fine tune the design to create the best solution for budget and performance.

tank details

AWS’s innovative designs increase tank strength and allow for maximum capacity with interiors that are clear and clean.  AWS was the first in the business to be CSA approved for burial depths of up to 10’ (3m) and 13" (4M) which allow for deep bury for frost protection and to accommodate for 9’ basements in new rural housing development to install basement plumbing.  Septic, “T” tanks, oil / grease separator tanks are fitted with water tight, 4” rubber inlets.

All of our tanks come with MK sulfate resistance product meeting CSA requirements.

Key factors in producing our product:

1. Custom Designed Moulds
After in-depth research, we custom design and manufacture molds like our waffle design, rink top Junior and Senior.
New this year is the 2000 gal. septic tank with hybrid man-way entrance.

2. Quality Control Concrete
AWS's concrete is batched on-site using quality aggregates along with temperature-controlled water for the best concrete possible to yield a 40 MPA rating or higher. This rating goes beyond CSA standards.

3. Special Pouring Technique
AWS’s upside down pouring technique eliminates bottom seams with no separation while casting. This process creates strong tongue-and-groove joint (on our round product) and ship lap joint (rink top product) on the sidewall that is completed with sealant rubber, making it strong and resistant to hydraulic pressures and leaks.

4. Start to Finish
AWS has the equipment, expertise and knowledge to see your project through from beginning to end. Our service is uncompromised and our solutions concrete, ensuring your installation runs smoothly and safely. We can also provide coring, accessories, pipe, sealants, delivery and placement.

frequently asked questions

How does a septic system work?

If you have a septic system at your home, whatever goes down your drain or in your toilet goes to your septic tank. These waste products flow into the first chamber of your septic tank where the solids and liquid are separated and the organic matter is broken down. From there, water crosses over the baffle wall into the second chamber. From there, the effluent is either pumped or siphoned to your septic field area.

What are some common problems with septic systems?
Improper design & installation and lack of maintenance are two common issues. Septic Systems should be planned with a AOWMA qualified professional in terms of size, and placement, based on site-specific conditions. Planning for your current and future use could save time and money. Maintaining systems through effective water usage, and regularly scheduled removal of the solid waste, can prolong the life of a system.

Tips for keeping our septic system working efficiently:

  • Do not dump cleaners and chemicals down your drain. Household cleaners, detergents and disinfectants can prevent you septic system from working effectively.
  • Do not dump grease, oils and other kitchen waste into your septic system
  • Do not put kitchen waste in the speptic system, even through the use of garburators
  • Reducing water usage can help your septic system work effecitly
  • Do not put non-biodegradeable items into your septic tank
  • Have your system maintanined and pumped out on a regular basis

Do I need a permit for my septic system?

In both Alberta and Manitoba, a permit is required for the installation of all septic systems. Permits are required to preserve both our environment, and personal health and safety. In Manitoba, the legislation falls under the Environment Act, while in Alberta it is governed by the Safety Codes Act.

What to do when I have problems with my septic tank?
Always notify a qualified contractor if you are having problems with your septic tank. Attempting to diagnose or repair septic system problems could result in further damage to the system and is not recommended. The law requires that you must notify local authorities before repairing and replacing your septic system.

How do I know if I am having septic tank problems?

  • Your high water alarm is going off.
  • Sewage is backing up in your house.
  • You can smell sewage in your house, and outside.
  • You can see the ground in your septic field is wet

How do I clean my Septic tank?

We do not recommend using chemical cleaners in septic systems. Certain chemicals can allow sewage to pass through the septic system without being properly treated, and can damage or clog the system, as well as cause well contamination. Always contact a qualified professional to clean your septic tank.

How often should I pump out my septic system?

If a septic system is not properly maintained and inspected, solids can build up at the bottom of the holding tank. This could result in sewage backing up into your house and could also cause damage to the septic system.

The size of the tank, and how often it is used will determine how often the solids are pumped from the holding tank. It is recommended that holding tanks are pumped out when they are 1/3 full of sludge.
